DIY MINI GREENHOUSE

A DIY mini greenhouse is a perfect way to grow those veggies or flowers when you can't grow them outdoors. When those winter days makes it impossible to grow those Herbs or Salad Greens, a DIY mini greenhouse will make that little problem go away. There are several types you can build, from window units to larger types in your back yard or even inside your house.

The most common type of DIY mini greenhouse is one you build in a window. This lets you grow Herbs so you will always have the freshest seasonings for that perfect meal. If you like fresh salads, you can have one whenever you want. You can also grow healing herbs such as Aloe, or how about Chocolate Mints for that unique cup of tea. This type will keep those Herbs, Vegetables and even Flowers at your fingertips all year round.

With a little planning this can be an oasis of healing calm. It will also contribute to energy management since you will be using the energy of the sun to grow your plants.

The other type of DIY mini greenhouse is a multi-shelf unit. This will allow for more growing area with a comparatively small footprint. This can be placed anywhere you have some open wall space. Of course this will take a little more planning with the lighting and with climate control. But it is well within the capabilities of the average home handyman.

The last type of DIY mini greenhouse we are going to talk about is one uses an inside room dedicated to just this use. It can be as small a 2 by 2 feet, or as large as 8 feet square. Or any size in between. All of these can be built with materials found around the house. Or you can buy the plans or even get the kits with all the building materials, lighting and ventilation systems already put together. A mini indoor greenhouse can be built from a prepackaged kit, or from from something as simple as Plexiglass or even some plastic sheeting. All you need is a frame and something to enclose it that will allow light in and allow for controlled ventilation. With a DIY mini greenhouse that is completely inside your home, you also need to allow for proper lighting.

The lighting can be as simple as a 26 watt bulb, although the higher wattages are better. It is impossible to use too much light, but they will need some dark time also, so plan accordingly. Other types of lighting include HID (high intensity discharge). HID lamps come in two varietes, HPS (high pressure sodium) which emits light in the reddish-orange spectrum. This is usually best for fruits and flowers. The other variety oh HID lighting is MH (metal halide), this type of lamp produces light in the blue spectrum, this type of light is best for leafy plants. You can also use fluorescent grow lights designed for mini indoor greenhouse use.

We can cover so much more on this topic, but for now, whether you build it yourself or buy a predesinged kit. A DIY mini greenhouse is a project that will pay for itself all year round. And you will surely be the envy of the neighborhood when you bring out those fresh greens in december.
