Landscaping Around Gazebos

One of the things sometimes overlooked is the landscaping around gazebos. We have studied the yard and garden areas and determined the best place for it. However, what about after it is set-up? It is setting there in the perfect location, has all the amenities, such as a ceiling fan, lawn furniture, etc. Now, all we need to do is to make it look like a natural part of the area. That is where landscaping around gazebos comes in. Depending upon the location, you might want to grow climbing vines or flowers. For that, you will need trellises or arbors for the flowers to grow on.

One of the things to consider here is what are you going to use the gazebo for? Remember, some flowers attract insects such as bees, and other flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies.  If you just want a quiet nook, where you can relax and enjoy a little down time, then it just a matter of personal preference. However, if you are going to entertain guests then you might not want some unwanted guests, such as the insects. Therefore, you might consider flowers that attract the hummingbirds instead.

A rule of thumb in landscaping around gazebos is to keep shrubbery no more than 2/3 the height of the structure. This will allow the area to have a more rustic look, and make it look more natural. Speaking of shrubbery, some planter benches around the inside will add color and atmosphere to your creation. In addition, do not forget the walkways to the gazebo. If it is in a corner of your yard, then a single path may be all you need, but if it is in the middle or around a garden, then you might want multiple paths. Of course, the paths can have rest areas along the way, but that is another project. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. With some open gazebos, trellises with climbing vines or flowers may be just what the doctor ordered. The idea is to keep it light and airy so it does not seem overgrown or buried under the foliage. The idea in landscaping around gazebos is to accentuate not hide your creation.

Another thing to consider when landscaping around gazebos is whether to give the area a symmetrical or asymmetrical design. If your creation is in the middle or in a corner of yard, then a symmetrical design may be what will enhance your design. However, if you have built next to your patio, or in a garden, then an asymmetrical design may be what you need to put your creation in a league of its own. The difference between the two designs is that with symmetrical design, both sides will be the same. Flowers and planters are to enhance and frame your creation and an asymmetrical design will enhance one side to offset something on the other side.

Another thing to consider when landscaping around gazebos is the style of your creation. A Victorian style will look better with some types of landscaping, while an oriental style will look best with other types of plants and flowers. Will the structure have side panels or be freestanding? However you do it, when you consider landscaping around gazebos the only limit is your imagination.
