BAMBOO FENCE

Bamboo Fences are a very aesthetic way to provide accent to different features in your yard. They can be used as privacy panels around pools or hot tubs. You can have either a living bamboo fence or a conventional assembled barrier.

The least expensive method is to plant a living bamboo fence. The plant will grow into a very dense hedge that will provide privacy; inhibit erosion, and a very durable wind break. The plants are a member of the grass family and will last for years with little or no maintenance after it is established.

If you choose to plant a living bamboo fence, you will need to choose between two basic genre, clumping types or running types. The running type spreads faster, but be prepared to invest time and effort in controlling and guiding the spread. The running type spreads through rhizomes just under the surface of the soil. You will need to establish a barrier to control the spread of the plant. The clumping type grows out from a central plant and stays where it is planted, but will still require some control. The clumping type will also provide for a much denser living fence.

Another advantage to using living bamboo as a fence is that the plants convert more CO2 to oxygen than other plants of the same size. You can choose from many different species according to your individual tastes. Some grows over ten feet tall, and other species are less than four feet tall. Bamboo fences also provide a cost effective way to enhance the curb appeal of your home. The plant is a grass and is actually the fastest growing grass in the world. It’s stronger than concrete and is two to three times as strong as timber. It is flexible enough to stand up to harsh winds that would flatten a conventional fence.

One of the considerations in selecting the type of bamboo fence is what is it to

be used for. If you want a hedge they can be pruned or cut to achieve the desired height and thickness. You can choose one of the shorter varieties, but some will spread faster than others so some root control may be necessary. And as an added bonus, some of the shorter varieties are edible, so you can harvest your fence, and it will always regenerate. How’s that for green living? For a privacy screen you would choose one of the taller varieties that can be trimmed to achieve the desired outcome. The main difference here is that privacy screens are usually much taller than hedges. Bamboo fences also make great windbreaks, one of the giant varieties that grow from 20 to 72 feet and can have a maximum diameter of 6 inches.

Other benefits are that your bamboo fence can be harvested for building materials that can be used to build other bamboo fences that you don’t want to grow. Bamboo can be use for other things than fences. The material can be used to make Tiki Bars, used for flooring, used as accent material on internal walls. The only limit is your imagination, patience and skills.
